A Secure, Industry-Standard Railcar Telematics Platform
The RailPulse Platform is a secure, standardized, and vendor neutral infrastructure that provides real-time data on the location, condition, and health of railcars across North America. It uses telemetry devices on railcars to transmit data to the cloud, where it is processed and delivered to subscribers for enhanced visibility, transparency, and collaboration
CONSISTENT RAIL INDUSTRY STANDARDS
The standardized RailPulse technology infrastructure streamlines the capture and sharing of critical data to improve performance across the North American freight rail network. RailPulse defines technology standards and physical requirements for telemetry equipment installation to maximize the true potential of today’s technology, including:
RP-ITSS: The Inbound Telemetry Data Interface Standard (Vendor to RailPulse)
Ensures that users of RailPulse will receive a consistent base level of data regardless of the telemetry vendor installed on the railcar.
Timely and Complete Data
Ensures that the data is collected and delivered to users in a consistent and timely fashion to be used to drive improved service and safety.
Uniform Nomenclature
Ensures that information on railcar location, condition and health can be understood by all users regardless of who instrumented the car, which vendor’s equipment is on the car, and who is handling it.
Installation and Mounting
Ensures consistent performance of the devices and facilitates ease of installation and maintenance.
RP-DATA: The Outbound Data Interface Standard (RailPulse to Customers)
Ensures that regardless of railcar owner or telemetry vendor, users of RailPulse APIs receive consistent, easy to understand data to integrate into their systems.
HOW RAILPULSE WORKS
RailPulse works with telematics vendors to:
- Identify and qualify sensors that meet RailPulse requirements
- Ensure sensor quality is consistent across installs
- Build data pipelines from vendor systems to RailPulse
RAILPULSE PLATFORM:
- Consolidates & curates vendor data in a common telematics database
- Enriches with data from Railinc and other sources
- Generates and shares alerts based on user preferences
- Enforces data sharing rules
SUBSCRIBER DATA:
RailPulse delivers cleaned telematics data to Subscribers in two ways:
- Through RailPulse’s online portal
- Directly, via API connection between RailPulse Platform and subscriber

HOW RAILPULSE WORKS
REAL-TIME RAILCAR TRACKING
LOCATION
Track-level GPS latitude and longitude location of the railcar, both moving and stopped
CONDITION
The status of the car in terms of empty/loaded, doors open/closed, hatches opened/closed, temperature, moisture, impact, or any other onboard sensors
HEALTH
The mechanical health of the car in terms of bearings, bolsters, air pressure, couplers, or other components
RAILPULSE SHIPPER DATA AND ANALYTICS
At RailPulse we see it as our responsibility to simplify and accelerate the process of introducing telematics into the rail industry. We have developed standards to take the guesswork out of using railcar telemetry. We carefully evaluate and certify telemetry vendors so that our subscribers can be assured that the products they install will deliver the results they are seeking. To further ease the process, for some certified vendors, RailPulse can even serve as a one-stop shop for procuring the telemetry equipment and data.
CONTINUOUS MONITORING TO OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE
RailPulse continuously monitors all the telemetry devices that are reporting to the RailPulse platform and works proactively with our telemetry vendor partners to ensure that those devices are functioning correctly and delivering the data that our subscribers rely on. We regularly monitor the service that RailPulse and our certified vendors are delivering and develop continuous improvement plans if we fall short of our shared service level commitments. Our goal at RailPulse is to free our Subscribers from the effort of monitoring their telemetry devices so that they can focus on using the data to improve their rail shipping experience.
