The Power of Real-Time Railcar Data
RailPulse delivers valuable insights into railcar location, condition and health. Sharing this information between shippers, lessors and railroads is critical to achieve higher levels of visibility, transparency and collaboration in the industry. RailPulse data is shared but protected. Controls are in place to limit data access to only the railcar owner/lessee, subscriber and railroad customers named on the railcar’s waybill route.
THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DATA:
How were the rules for accessing data in the RailPulse system determined?
The rules for accessing data in the RailPulse system are modeled on the rules that are accepted and currently implemented in the North American railroad industry for accessing railroad data from RailInc.
Who owns the data elements that are generated from telemetry devices installed on railcars?
The data generated from telemetry devices installed on railcars is owned by the Subscriber that equips the railcars and pays for the data to be delivered.
What Data Sets can be accessed from RailPulse?
Subscriber Data is derived from telematic equipment installed on a railcar integrated with other data that the Subscriber is authorized to receive. The data from the telematic equipment is owned by the Subscriber.
Service Data is the data that RailPulse is authorized to share with parties named on the railcar waybill. The goal of sharing this data is to increase customer satisfaction with railroad service through improved information on the movement and condition of loaded or empty railcars.
Safety Data is the data that RailPulse is authorized to share with railroads on the railcar’s waybill route. The goal of sharing this data is to facilitate safe and efficient operations as the railroads serve their customers.
Owner Data is the data that RailPulse is authorized to share with the owners of railcars that did not install telemetry equipment on them. The goal of sharing this data is to facilitate effective maintenance of railcars in the North American rail network.
What is a Letter of Authority (LOA)?
A Letter of Authority (LOA) authorizes RailPulse to share certain Data Sets with grantee companies. RailPulse has two types of LOAs: (1) Fleet LOA which is used by the railcar Subscriber to authorize sharing of Subscriber Data on a fleet of railcars with a grantee company, and (2) Waybill LOA which authorizes sharing of Service Data on railcars with a grantee company only while it is named on a waybill.
VALUABLE RAILCAR INSIGHTS AND REPORTING
Subscribers can access railcar data through the RailPulse portal with customizable features that include alerts, geofences and fleet management. The data can also be accessed via API connection directly into existing systems.
